Car insurance – take out road traffic insurance policy from the first day

You are required by law to have road traffic insurance for a car you own, and as the owner, you must be the one taking out this policy. If you do not take out a road traffic insurance policy from the first day that you buy the car, it can be costly. You can go through the insurance company of your choice.

The two most important actions to take as soon as you buy a car are:

  • Take out a road traffic insurance policyRegister the change of ownership
  • When you buy a car, send the papers pertaining to the purchase to the Swedish Road Traffic Registry at the Swedish Transport Agency. This authority then registers you as the new owner of the vehicle.

Road traffic insurance if you do not have a personal identity number

If you do not yet have a personal identity number or co-ordination number, you cannot be registered as the owner. What you should do then is send in a written request to the Swedish Transport Agency that you want a co-ordination number. You can do this at the same time as you send in the papers about the change of ownership to the Swedish Transport Agency.

The Swedish Transport Agency can then order a co-ordination number on your behalf from the Swedish Tax Agency. Once you receive this co-ordination number, the Swedish Transport Agency can register you in the Swedish Road Traffic Registry as the owner of the car you bought.

Although it can take time to receive a co-ordination number, it is important to keep in mind that as soon as you buy the car, you must take out a road traffic insurance policy for the car. Insurance companies cannot require that you have a Swedish personal identity number or co-ordination number to be able to take out a road traffic insurance policy. In other words, you can take out a road traffic insurance policy even if you do not have a co-ordination number yet.

The road traffic insurance policy covers all personal injuries and property damages that you cause with the vehicle, but it does not cover costs for damages to your own car. You can protect your own car by taking out a full or partial coverage insurance policy.
